Chennai Superkings vs King XI Punjab (21st march 2010)

Result: Punjab win in Super over

Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to field first. With a very good spell from Murali they restricted KXIP to 136, Yuvraj Singh top scored with 43. Chasing a small arget Hayden and Parthiv started well for the Superkings. But with the loss of Hayden, wicket fell in regular interval. Finally with the loss of Parthiv's wicket superkings are bunled into 136 runs in 20 overs making the match as tie and taking it to super over.

Since Chennai batted second, they batted first in the super over and scored 9 runs. As per the rule, the batting team will nominate 3 batsmen while the bowling team will select one bowler. If the batting side loses 2 wickets before the end of the over, the innings will change. Punjab scored 10 runs in 4 balls losing one wicket.

Numbers that mattered, Match 16

  • 2 Number of tied matches in IPL history. The only other such occasion was the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals at Cape Town on April 23, 2009. Interestingly on both occasions, a Sri Lankan spinner bowled the second Super Over of the match (Ajantha Mendis did so for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009). The side batting second has won on both occasions. Also the match was decided off the fourth ball both times.
  • 3 Yuvraj Singh became only the third Indian batsman to aggregate 1,500 runs in Twenty20 matches after Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma.
  • 53 Number of balls taken by Parthiv Patel for his fifty – the second slowest fifty of IPL. Only JP Duminy has taken more (55) balls to score an IPL fifty (for Mumbai Indians v Kings XI Punjab) at Durban in 2009.
  • 66 Percent of Chennai’s runs made by Parthiv Patel and Matthew Hayden. For Kings XI Punjab, Irfan Pathan and Yuvraj Singh accounted for more than 60% of team’s total.
  • 106 Number of deliveries on which not a single run was scored off the bat – most in a match in IPL 2010.
